The Newnan Herald, Newnan, Georgia Saturday Morning, March 17, 1866
Names of Soldiers Buried at Newnan, Georgia
The following has been prepared and arranged by Mr. Isaac N. Shannon ( formerly Sharp Shooter, Whitworth Guns, Maney’s Brigade Cheatham’s Division, Army of Tenn.,) exhibiting as far as could be ascertained, the names and ranks of soldiers who are buried at this place together with the companies, Regiments, and states to which they belonged.
That the list is incomplete there can be no doubt, as a few of the graves are unmarked and the names on the head boards of a few others have become, unintelligible. A few of the citizens buried soldiers in their private family lots, and a few other graves are enclosed. These are kept in neat repair, and are tastefully ornamented by the fair hands of some of Newnan’s lovely daughters, but by far the greater number of graves are unprotected from the mutilations of stock. In justice to the merits of these brave men; nine tenths of whom now sleep far from home and kindred, ought not their graves be enclosed? Will not exchanges copy the following?
